The size and shape of a woman’s breasts often play an important role in defining her self-image and sense of femininity. For women who feel that their breasts are too small or too large, or have lost their youthful profile, Dr. Toohey offers breast augmentation, breast lift, and breast reduction procedures. He also offers revisional breast surgery for women who have had breast enhancement, but are not satisfied with the results.
Breast enhancement surgery is different for each individual. The following are general descriptions of the procedures available from Dr. Toohey. Breast Augmentation
Many women who are otherwise satisfied with their figures feel their breasts are too small to be in proportion to the rest of their bodies. In many cases, they find it difficult to shop for fashionable clothing, since most of it is designed for women of average proportions. For these women, Dr. Toohey offers breast augmentation surgery.
To add volume to the breast, Dr. Toohey will implant a supple silicone pouch filled either with a saline solution similar to that naturally occurring in the body or with silicone gel, which has a consistency similar to that of natural breast tissue. During the preoperative consultation, Dr. Toohey will discuss the advantages of each type of implant and help determine which is most appropriate for you.
Dr. Toohey nearly always performs “under muscle” implant surgery. At your consultation, he can explain the differences between smooth or textured implants; round or biodimensional implants, and moderate or high profile implants.
The result of breast augmentation is a fuller, natural looking breast profile that enhances your proportions and provides increased self-confidence in your overall appearance.
Breast Lift
As a result of pregnancy, significant weight loss, or just the process of aging, many women’s breasts stretch and sag. These women may not be dissatisfied with the size of their breasts, but simply the shape. In these cases, Dr. Toohey can perform a breast lift, removing excess skin and restoring a youthful breast profile.
To perform a breast lift, skin is removed from around the areola, and then the new edges are pulled toward the center and sutured around the areola, providing good concealment of surgical scars. If more skin needs to be removed, it is usually taken from the lower breast, using an inverted “T” incision along the crease under the breast and from the middle of the crease to the bottom of the areola. In these cases, the nipple and areola are sometimes moved upward to restore a youthful look.
Breast Reduction
Breasts that are disproportionately large can be a real problem for a woman. If large enough, they can cause health problems, including back pain, neck pain, poor posture from bearing the weight, and shoulder pain from the pressure of bra straps. They can also limit a woman’s ability to find fashionable clothing, since it is usually designed for women of average proportions. Dr. Toohey can perform breast reduction surgery to relieve the burden of overly large breasts.
Breast reduction surgery is similar to a breast lift, but more involved, since it removes not only skin, but also tissue beneath the skin. As with a breast lift, an inverted “T” incision is used. To maintain a youthful breast profile, the nipple and areola are relocated higher on the breast. In some cases, it may be necessary to transplant them, separating them from the nerve and resulting in a loss of nipple sensation.
Revisional Breast Surgery
Although breast augmentation is a common procedure that normally achieves the desired results with complete safety, some women want or need revisional breast surgery. This can be to change the size, position, or type of implant, or to solve problems that occasionally arise, such as infections, a ruptured implant, or hardening of tissue immediately surrounding the implant.
Dr. Toohey is among the relatively few plastic surgeons with the skill and experience to perform revisional breast surgery, which is more complicated than the original procedure.
Depending on the reason for it, revisional surgery may include moving or replacing the implant, revising the pocket that holds the implant, removing excess skin or fat, removing hardened tissue, repositioning the nipples, revising scars, or any combination of these.
